The history of the Lemon Festival that has made Menton

Menton is nicknamed Lemon Rock and is one of the biggest lemon growers in the world.

The Menton Lemon Festival was founded in 1934 to celebrate growing the region's iconic lemon. It was also founded to warm the cockles of locals and winter tourists, even though the town enjoys 316 days of sunshine per year. It's heaven for citrus fruit!

Did you know?

  • The lemons used for the event don't come from the region. The Menton lemon is a premium and protected product with a PGI (protected geographical indication) so it's only for consumption and fine dining establishments. Just take Chef Mauro Colagreco at Le Mirazur in Menton (awarded best restaurant in the world in 2019) who puts it into several of his dishes.
  • An average of over 180 tons of citrus fruit are shipped in from all over the world and 300 people are involved in setting the scene. All the fruit is sold to locals after the event to avoid waste.

An event that's going to ROCK! Whether you're with family, friends, that special someone or you're flying solo, the Lemon Festival should be on your bucket list.
